Gum disease at times may progress painlessly, producing few obvious signs, like food getting stuck, bad odour from the mouth and not feeling fresh even after brushing well.
The mild form is called gingivitis. This is when your gums are infected. If not treated, the infection can travel below your gum line and onto the bone. Then it gets serious, involving the tooth-supporting structure and is called periodontitis. Both gingivitis and periodontitis have been shown to raise the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, pneumonia, and cancer. Early detection is our best bet.
Certain symptoms may point to some form of the disease.
The symptoms of gum disease include:
- Gums that bleed during and after tooth brushing
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
- Receding gums
- Formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down or in the fit of partial dentures.

Scaling and Root Planing

Gingivectomy
Also known as gingival sculpting or crown lengthening, in periodontal surgery, we eliminate extra tissue under local anaesthesia. The gums typically heal in about a week's time. The end result is a re-shaping of the unnecessary gum and bone tissue to expose the natural tooth. This periodontics procedure also evens the gum line when applied to a single tooth. Periodontal Flap Surgery
In cases, where the infection has slipped into the bone region of gums, causing
difficulty in chewing hard food and tooth, start to feel little mobile. The gingival envelope is gently separated from the underlying tissue and the infected bony area is scraped and cleaned. At times synthetic bone replacement is placed yo initiate bone regrowth.
Regeneration
Regeneration is a periodontal surgical procedure in which we fold back the gum tissue to eliminate bacteria. Everything from membranes to proteins that stimulate tissue to bone grafts can be used to kick-start the body's inherent ability to regenerate bone as well as tissue.
Soft Tissue Grafting
This is a very technique sensitive procedure done by an expert specialist. In this periodontic surgery, we use the gum tissue outside of the area to be treated. Gum tissue is taken from the palate or another source and used to cover the root that is exposed. Soft tissue grafting can be performed on one or many teeth to even the gum line and minimize sensitivity.
